This paper focuses on translational parallel mechanisms (TPMs), that is on parallel manipulators whose platform is provided with a pure translational motion with respect to the frame. It approaches, in a geometric way, the problem of the kinematic synthesis and classification of TPMs and it systematizes many architectures presented in the literature into a general frame. It provides a survey of the state of the art on such a topic.
