Abstract
Education was in antiquity, as now, one of the main features that could mark a difference between people in the center or at the borderline of any society. During the Hellenism, moreover, the problem of teaching Greek to many people whose mother language was different, became a strategic and relevant issue for the most powerful monarchies, Ptolemies, Seleucids and Attalids. Kings, cities and private benefactors were aware of the importance that a good education could have in order to create a strong social support and consent, both in the poleis and in the chora. Gymnasia, foundations and fiscal provisions were the tools used by public and private benefactors in order to provide such important base to implement and develop a Greek way of life. On the other side it could help small social groups, excluded by their foreign origin, to be accepted and integrated in the new society.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
