FOS (Fiber Optic Sensors) are particularly suitable for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) strengthening systems, because of their good compatibility with fibrous materials. Nevertheless, strain measurements on FRP are affected by various factors. In this paper the influence of some factors on the measurements carried out by Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors is studied. This research includes an experimental program and a comparison with theoretical results. The experimental part is based on a large number of tensile tests on specimens of carbon and aramid fiber composites. A theoretical model previously developed for electrical strain gauges is utilized to simulate the influence of low modulus host materials where the sensors are bonded. The aim of this research is to better understand the influence of the basic variables which can cause errors in strain measurements using FOS externally bonded. Additionally, the behavior of FOS embedded in epoxy resin is considered.
