The aim of the work is the analysis of defects or cracks that appear in the external shells of an helicopter tail during a fixed time mission. The work has been organized in two phases: during the first part the helicopter tail has been numerically analysed, after this screening an experimental analysis based on acoustic emission (AE) has been developed. The aim of the numerical analysis is the identification of the more critical zone of the tail structure in order to focus the experimental study by AE monitoring in those specific zones. The experimental study has been done by laboratory tests loading the helicopter tail by a static apparatus. The AE monitoring point out specific cracks not revealed by visual inspection.
