The article traces a profile of the spiritual direction as practised in the Gaza monasticism during the first half of the 6th century. It stresses the special paedagogic relation created by the guiding of a "spiritual father" who assumes a unique authority in the face of his disciple. It is a model of obedience and practical behaviour that attracts also laymen and provides an extraordinary example of the impact exerted by the "holy man" on late antique society.
