The essay approaches the definition of the concept of "south" from the reflexive framework elaborated by Antonio Gramsci and collecting the ideas expressed by some Portuguese authors (Antero de Quental and the constellation of poets of the Portuguese "fin de siècle" and the Orfeu Generation). The critical contribution is a part of a large European research financed by HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area) about iberian studies in the European context, led by the University of Lisbon.
