Abstract

Reliability, fault-diagnosis and fault-tolerance issues have recently assumed primary importance in control design, due to increasing complexity of systems. Thus, a wide variety of techniques have been devised to guarantee such characteristics at various levels. However, many of the items exploited by these different procedures correspond or may be reduced to objects which are well-known in the geometric approach context. Thus, analysis of the main problems of FDI in the methodological context of the geometric approach (including its recent extensions to norm-optimization problems and to time-delay systems provides insight into the structure of systems and related problems, points out common aspects of apparently different techniques, and paves the way to unified and more rigorous design strategies.
