Amphiphilic dextrin conjugates were prepared and evaluated for their use in pharmaceutical formulations as complexing agents for hydrophobic drugs. The aim was to improve the aqueous solubility and consequently the bioavailability of the complexed drugs to exploit their therapeutic potential. Antitumor drugs have been proved to increase their therapeutic potential following complexation with these amphiphilic dextrine due to the increase of their bioavailability. In particular Fenretinide, a derivative of Vitamin A endowed with antitumor activity without dose-limiting side effects, complexed with these amphiphilic dextrine provided a strong antitumor activity which had not been observed without complexation cause its low bioavailability.
