In this article I interpret Vondel's "Gysbreght van Aemstel" as a subtle attempt to rewrite, or rather restage, the master narrative of the Revolt from the perspective of Amsterdam, a city which had been a bastion of Catholicism until 1578, standing for a long time on the "wrong" side. Vondel's plays showed that Amsterdam also had a past that deserved to be remembered and commemorated, a past that ran the risk of being completely removed from the national consciousness of the young Republic.

Abstract

In this article I interpret Vondel's "Gysbreght van Aemstel" as a subtle attempt to rewrite, or rather restage, the master narrative of the Revolt from the perspective of Amsterdam, a city which had been a bastion of Catholicism until 1578, standing for a long time on the "wrong" side. Vondel's plays showed that Amsterdam also had a past that deserved to be remembered and commemorated, a past that ran the risk of being completely removed from the national consciousness of the young Republic.
