Tumours with hybrid morphological features between two different histological types are seldom observed in salivary glands. We report a hybrid malignant tumour arising in the right parotid gland of a 53 year-old Caucasian woman. Microscopically, two different components were present in the same tumour: one was represented by a biphasic neoplasm consistent with epithelial-myoepithelial cell carcinoma, the other was a poorly differentiated tumour with cytological features of a lymphoepithelial carcinoma. In both component, a marked lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate, with germinal center formation, was evident throughout the tumour, in both components. Neoplastic cells of both tumoural components were diffusely positive for Epstein Barr virus (EBV) mRNA by in situ hybridisation. This case appears to be unique, as the association between EBV and myoepithelial tumours has not been described, and lymphoepithelial carcinoma with epi-myoepithelial carcinomas have to be added to the possible combinations in hybrid tumours.
