Development of last wills and testaments in Italy is studied from 13th century to the present day. Special attention is paid to medieval period, with regard to relations between the suggestions included in the works of Ars Notaria and actual testaments of that period. The great prevalence of testaments drawn up by notaries up to the end of "ancien régime" is then investigated. As for 19th century, different preferences in the various Italian Civil Codes before 1861 are explored, along with choices finally included in the first Civil Code of Italy, in 1865. In the end, the 1942 Civil Code now in force is scrutinized both as far as its drafting and its suitability for current demands are concerned.
