By comparing one French classic, "La guerre des boutons", with some of its italian translations/editions this chapter shows a concrete example of the treatment that a classic can receive, both from editorial and translatological points of view, in a historical perspective. The author analyses how the translated versions render the original peritext (made up of a "Préface" by the author, the opening epigraphs to each chapter and the numerous footnotes), the additions made in the translated versions (with respect to the source text), and the impact that these choices might have on potential readers.
