The weight must be completely restored before carrying out an accurate assessment of the psychological functions and personality of eating disorder patients. Eating disorder patients should be educated that the maintenance of dietary restriction and underweight is associated with severe physical and psychosocial impairment. Since starvation symptoms are potent mechanisms maintaining eating disorder psychopathology, the treatment of underweight eating disorders should always address underweight and dietary restriction.
