Concerning the Latin gerund and gerundive, different issues about the origin, the ‘priority’ question, and the usages as infinitival and participial forms are repeatedly debated. This paper, whose perspective is both typological and diachronic, focuses on the peculiar relationships between the -nd- forms and the other non-finite verb forms. The conclusions propose an explanation of the gerund and gerundive in terms of parallel developments from earlier intransitive action nominals involving the inherited anticausative marker *-dh-.
